Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask brilliant in 2-1 victory that pushes Hurricanes to brink

SportsPulse: USA TODAY Sports’ Kevin Allen breaks down three players who we should be paying attention to in the NHL’s Conference Finals.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes changed their goalies with the hope of climbing back into contention in the Eastern Conference final.

It might have worked out better if they could have forced the Boston Bruins to switch their goalies.

Boston netminder Tuukka Rask continued to be a tour de force this postseason, making 35 saves Tuesday night to give the Bruins a 2-1 win in Game 3 and a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

If the Bruins down the Hurricanes Thursday night in Raleigh, they will advance to the Stanley Cup Final to play the winner of the San Jose Sharks-St. Louis Blues series.

“He’s definitely the difference-maker – you can feel it,” said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Brind’Amour switched from Petr Mrazek to Curtis McElhinney in net for Game 3 and McElhinney played solidly. But that move wasn’t enough to overcome Rask’s big game.

“It was just a change,” Brind’Amour said. “We’ve been happy with both guys, so it’s not really that hard of a decision. We have rotated all year. We thought about rotating at the start of the playoffs.”

On an early power play, Rask made four consecutive saves in a span of seconds.

“Yeah, I might have had my eyes closed for three of them,” Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He has been dialed in since April 8th or 10th. He really hasn’t had a poor night.”

In an arena overflowing with energy, the Hurricanes threw everything they had at the Bruins, outshooting them 20-6 in the first period. But Task stopped every shot, leaving the score at 0-0 going into the first intermission.

“You need to get something out of that period, obviously,” Brind’Amour said. “I think not getting anything is a little bit demoralizing.”

Giving up two or fewer goals in nine of his last 11 starts in these playoffs, Rask is playing some of the best hockey of his career. He’s considered one of the early favorites for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff most valuable player.

“It’s been his poise,” Bruins veteran Patrice Bergeron said. “To be honest, he’s been amazing and he’s a huge reason why we are here right now.”

Rask said he doesn’t really feel any different than he has in the past.

“I’ve felt good many, many years,” Rask said. “But sometimes the puck hits you and sometimes it doesn’t. A bounce here, a bounce there, either it goes your way or it doesn’t.

“This year I feel like we really have each other’s backs. We’ve been in some tight games, but then our depth comes in and we score goals and we take over the game. So that’s a difference. In other years, we haven’t had that depth.”

Brind’Amour isn’t one of those coaches who refuse to discuss an opposing player. If an opponent plays well, he gives them credit. He believed Rask made some critical saves.

“We didn’t generate a ton, but there were a couple in the second, one against (Sebastian) Aho that should have been in, and he makes the save,” Brind’Amour said. “That lifts your team big time.”

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead on second-period goals by Chris Wagner (1:21) and Brad Marchand (power play, 6:28), and Rask took care of the rest to spark the Bruins to their sixth consecutive postseason win and hand the Hurricanes their first playoff home loss. During the winning streak, the Bruins have outscored opponents 24-9.

The Hurricanes were 0-for-5 on the power play in Game 3, leaving them 1-for-12 in the series. They have only managed to score a power-play goal in four of their 14 playoff games.

“We can feel good about the fact that we at least gave them a game,” Brind’Amour said. “To me, we hadn’t given them a game yet.”

And because of Rask’s strong play, the Hurricanes are one game from elimination.
